How to Henna

Fabulous henna paste is so important. I love my current recipe. It’s one I’ve been using since April 2016. I usually tweak things when I get new henna powder, but by and large this has been working wonderfully! I weigh and measure everything. I recommend having a kitchen scale. They’re $10-$20 at any big box store or Amazon. I have all the other ingredients you need in my henna shop too.

Ingredient List:

Small Batch:

Large Batch:

Directions:

Weigh the henna powder and fructose, then add the essential oils. Slowly add lemon juice until the henna is the consistency of mashed potatoes. Cover with cling film and let it rest at room temperature (65-75F) for 24 hours. If your home is cool, you may need a few more hours. Thin the henna with rose water. Then strain through a nylon sock and cone it up!

Aftercare

Henna body art aftercare:

01/

Let the henna paste dry. This usually takes 15-30 minutes. The weather and your body temperature both effect dry time.

02/

Seal the dry henna paste with sugar solution. Spray or dab the sealant on. Sometimes this step is unnecessary. Ask your artist!

03/

Wear the henna paste for a minimum of 4 hours, 6 hours for maternity henna, 8 hours for bridal mehndi.

04/

Gently scrape the henna paste off the skin to reveal the fresh stain. Natural henna stains the skin an orange/brown color which deepens over 24-48 hours to a rich mahogany.

Henna stains typically last 1-3 weeks. Stain longevity is determined by personal body chemistry and how well the henna was cared for. Use olive oil to remove stubborn henna paste.

Jagua Aftercare:

01/

Allow the jagua paste or gel to dry. This can take up to 2 hours.

02/

Wash off the skin with cool soapy water.

03/

The design starts out light gray/blue/ and deepens in color over 12-24 hours to a rich blue/navy blue.

04/

Designs usually last 1-2 weeks.

Glitter body art and colored henna style body art:

01/

It’s waterproof! Pat dry after getting it wet.

02/

Avoid rubbing or picking the design. rinse well with warm water.

Face and body paint:

01/

For large designs, work some olive oil or coconut oil into the design.

02/

Use a soapy, lathered washcloth to remove the oil and paint.

03/

Rinse well with warm water.

*Our paints are FDA compliant and highly pigmented professional water activated makeup. If the paint gets wet first, it will reactivate and soak into the pores causing hazing and staining on the skin.

Warning Black Henna

Black Henna, or PPD, isn’t really henna at all. The black substance applied to the body is actually hair dye, mixed at a high concentration. It is NOT safe! Henna is never black. Using PPD is the cause of many health ailments, including leukemia and even death. The following gallery shows images of the burns, blisters and scarring common with ppd reactions. Natural henna does not produce such side effects. Only the dangerous chemical laden black henna will cause this type of reaction.

PPD reactions typically take 3-7 days to manifest

Common reactions are burning, blisters, and permanent scarring. Other reactions include asthma, leukemia, other cancers and even death.
