Blue body art has been around for centuries.  Romans described the Picts and Celts of northern France and Britian as having blue woad body markings.  Woad and Indigo contain the same dye molecule and while woad was used by the Picts and the Celts, Indigo was used in the Arab world.

Today’s blue body art is a bit different than in ages past.  It is created with an indigo vat made of freeze dried indigo.  I apply the liquid vat with a water color brush onto the skin. Once the design is completed it is washed with water and a drop of dishwashing liquid.  A second application of indigo is then painted on the skin and the washing is repeated.  Indigo stains the skin immediately, so once the second washing is complete, the design is ready too.  Gilding is optional.

Text Box: Celtic Woad Indigo Body Art
Painting the skin with woad or indigo is an ancient art form. It’s a free flowing expressive body art which reminds me of tonal water color work. Woad stains last approximately 3-7 days. Do something new and go blue!
